Aloha e, everyone. Our halau’s upcoming trip to Hilo starts this week, July 31. Some of you are already in Hawai’i. Some of us leave shortly. While in Hilo, we will visit places such as Puna, Kalapana, Kilauea, Ka’u, Hamakua Coast, Laupahoehoe, Waipio … just to name a few. Each place will be significant to the lessons we will learn. We will have workshops each night including pahu-drum making, weaving, chanting, voyaging and mo’olelo (story-telling).

Our days will also be filled with ono kau kau (food) and some of us will sample “local grinds” for the very first time! And if what you eat is not to your liking, do NOT throw it away because there’s always going to be one of us locals hovering over you “hoping” that you don’t like it; and who will be more than happy to rid you of your distaste for opihi, poi, poke or dried aku!!

We will gather with our two sister halau, Kawaipu’ilani (Kumu Keith) and Na Po’e Ao Hiwa (Kumu Kimo) and will culminate with a Ho’ike at the University of Hawai’i-Hilo on Aug. 7 (5:00PM dinner followed by a 7:00PM performance in the UH-Hilo’s theatre).

This trip will be a time for bonding, learning, eating, experiencing, sharing, eating, laughing, crying (good kine, tho’) and oh, did I mention eating?! But above all … to learn as much as we can about our beautiful Hawaiian Culture and how to malama it with deepest respect and aloha. Please use this blog site to share your experiences as you go through the days in Hilo. Post whatever experience(s) you want to share with your hula sisters and brothers who couldn’t make the trip. This will be our way of including them in spirit and heart.

Aloha,

(Aunty) Ku’ulei

The loooooong wait is finally over! Halau O ‘Aulani has a new look. Please navigate around and provide feedback.

Content has been updated since the last live deployment of the website, plus a few additions:

Online Registration – To accept Event sign-ups or school enrollments online with secure payment processing via Paypal. There are three links to this on the Home page and one at the top-right of the Header of each inside page.

Blog (this page) – The idea is to dedicate a page to share essays, articles, time-sensitive information, and other full-length piece of writing among members and with site visitors. A comment section (at the bottom) allows viewers to post reactions. NOTE: You must be registered and logged in to post a comment.

Forum – This is an online “bulletin board” that is shorter than a Blog but a longer version of a chat. It’s a common “sticky note” type of interactive exchange. This write-up probably belonged in the Forum page but I wrote it here as a test.

Albums – A collection of songs, photos and videos. Please feel free to send in other collections you want to publish. NOTE: All pictures are hosted by www.flickr.com while videos are hosted by www.veoh.com. This is “standard” practice for reasons of hard drive space – these sites have enormous storage capability because that’s what they’re designed for.

Membership Directory – A more ideal way to display the pre-formatted document on the page itself is being designed. Stay tuned.

Newsletter – This is done through RSS Feeds. Subscribers will receive emails in the form of a newsletter. The sign-up link for this service is at the bottom of the Home page.

As mentioned, feedback is necessary to improve and maintain the site.

Thank you for your patience.

Gabby

I dreamed I stood in a studio
And watched two sculptors there.
The clay they used was a young child’s mind
And they fashioned it with care.

One was a teacher — the tools she used
Were book, music and art.
The other, a parent, worked with a guiding hand
And a gentle, loving heart.

Day after day, the teacher toil’d with touch
That was careful, deft and sure.
While the parent labored by her side
And polished and smoothed it o’er.

And when at last, their work was done
They were proud of what they had wrought.
For the things they had molded into the child
Could neither be sold or bought.

And each agreed they would have failed
If each had worked alone.
For behind the parent stood the school
And behind the teacher, the home.
